The summer is flying by, and my birthday month has come and gone, but not without plenty of celebrations. We’ll get to that in a minute, but first, the work wins. 

A Play on Words to Recognize a Truer U.S. Story

As a continuation of June’s Reclamation Day, which reimagined the U.S.’s 250th birthday, Black Liberation-Indigenous Sovereignty (BLIS) Collective issued a reimagined rendition of Okemah, Oklahoma-born Woody Guthrie’s “This Land.” The change was subtle yet noticeable, changing the famous line to “This land was built by you and me,” a nod to Indigenous land grabs and slave labor. 

ke comms, in partnership with Human Impact Solutions, placed a story about the video release in the Tulsa World. Read the story here.

The Fight for Democracy

ke comms also placed a feature Q&A and video story about Tamieka Atkins, the CEO of ProGeorgia, who is fighting for the right of every voter in Georgia. Read that story here. 

Local Movement, Global Story

The storyline of the moment seems to be AI, particularly the implications of AI and hyperscale data centers. 

ke comms’ client The Forum for Real Economic Emancipation is hosting a forum on the topic on Aug. 2 in Tulsa, which will be streamed online as well. ke comms is handling national and local press engagement ahead of the forum. The Indigenous News Alliance interviewed FREE Board Member Camila Vergara for pieces in Mongabay, Grist and IndigiNews. A (Brief) Return to my Travel Writing Days 

I was fortunate to be able to return to my globe-trotting travel writing days and pen this hotel review from….Tulsa. Kidding aside, I have had my eye on Brut Hotel since it opened a few years ago and am grateful I was given the chance to stay and enjoy the pool, spa, rooftop restaurant and unique rooms.

An Invite to Communicators 

As President-Elect and Communications Chair for The Association for Women in Communications Tulsa, I have been busy supporting the planning for this year’s professional development luncheons we hold each month and the half-day workshop. 

For those reading this who live in Oklahoma, stay tuned for more details and consider a membership today. Our dues cover administrative fees, and we fund scholarships for college students studying various fields involving communications. Our board is all volunteer run. We are actively looking for people interested in joining committees, including programming, membership, development and our signature Newsmakers event to be held in April 2027.

Another Year Older, Same Dance Parties
